GMC Flute 9am

15th August 2020

Today we...
  • Played an Eb major scale (press on with this one! Play it slowly and make sure you get all the fingerings correct!)
  • Played Oom pah pah to Linstead Market (I think that's what it's called!)
  • Had a wee look at the rhythms for Dance of the Reed Flutes
Keep playing all of your scales - see if you can play them all two octaves on one breath. That's C, D, F, G and Eb major. Play through all your pieces and have a go at Dance of the Reed Flutes. Be careful when counting the semiquavers. 1 e and uh 2 e and uh etc. Also practice soaring with each of the dynamic markings - Forte; loud, mezzo forte; moderately loud and piano; quiet.

Today we...

  • Learnt A Major
  • Went up to piece 74.
Add A major to our scales, so we now have C D G F A. Here is a picture of the tricky rhythms in piece 74.

18th April 2020

Thanks for joining me on Zoom! I think it went as well as it could have!

This week we...

  • Played our 4 scales - C, D F and G. Keep up with these and practice playing two octaves of them.
  • We practiced our double tonguing when playing Listen to the Mocking Bird. We played through Deck the Hall and paid attention to our counting. Then we played through rolling hills. Write in the F and C sharps if you need. Then, we began O Little One Sweet by clapping it.
This week, you may go up to piece 74. Use that fingering exercise, Rolling Hills, to get your pinky nice and strong to play G#.

Kia ora koutou!

I've made recordings of Rigadoon for you to play along with. They're here on my youtube channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCw0SXgTHDKyMqTIT9oflSlg/ you can slow them down using the speed of video thing on youtube!

Happy practising!

21st March 2020

Today we:

  • Played C Major two and a half octaves (up to high g!).
  • Spent aaaages on Rigadoon. We really listening to each other's parts and took note of where we were playing in unison with other parts. I can make a recording of Rigadoon with the other parts for you to play along with.
  • Played Listen to the Mocking Bird from our book. After playing all those semiquavers, we worked hard on making sure that our quavers were in time. Clapping and writing the beats on the top could help you out.
This week:
  • Play those 2.5 octaves of C Major. Play it with a fingering chart beside you if you need.
  • Play your line in Rigadoon so you know it super well. Eventually this will go quite fast!
  • Play listen to the Mocking Bird, remembering to double tongue the semiquavers, and even the quavers if you like.
  • Go up to piece 71 in your book. This is a cool fingering exercise. If you take out the slurs and play it super fast, this would provide some good double tonguing practice.
